Trying to find your own sense of style can be a bit daunting, especially when it concerns trends. I’ve gone through such a change in my wardrobe in order to find my own style and to be honest this is all apart of growth in life. I shall now give some tips on finding your very own personal style (based on my personal thoughts and experience of course).
Rule
No.1 –
comfortability
To me, whatever I
put on or buy, I have to be comfortable wearing it. Meaning I need to feel
right in my clothes and this makes me feel good inside. Sounds really mushy but
its true. Punks don’t walk down the road and question their clothing do they?
No. They just walk, not giving a f*ck about what anyone has to say. This is
what I mean by comfortabilty and this also plays an important part when it
comes to your personal style. When you feel comfy in your clothes, stares and
weirded out looks will not bother you and this leads me on to my next rule.
Rule
No. 2 – Confidence
Confidence. This is
one gift that you can give yourself and maintain. Personal style is based
around this. I used to be insecure (not badly), but I would question my outfit
choices and continuously ask myself, “ can I pull this off?” or “will this
work?” Now I don’t have doubts. Confidence can change your whole outlook on
your wardrobe. You’ll buy things without thinking twice because you know that
the piece your buying is you down to the T and you can pull it off easily.
Confidence will allow you to just be yourself and this will reflect through
your clothing choices. One thing that I’ve learnt about confidence is to not
rely on others to give it to you. I say this because, if you base your
confidence off of what others say towards you then if they leave, they take
that confidence with them. It takes time to build up but once you get there,
you’ll never second-guess a fashion choice.
Rule
No.3 – Make Trends your own
Once you have the
last two rules in order this style thing becomes easy. Trends are the most
tedious yet exciting things. Exciting for the fact that there’s new trend
colours and new clothing pieces but tedious because, it means wardrobes change.
Making seamlessly transitions from season to season can be a task. But when you
have your own flair then you can pick out things from each trend, which
corresponds with your wardrobe and style. Don’t let seasons and trends takeover
your style, you have to let your style takeover them.
Rule
No.4 – Do Not Follow
One of my most
important rules. Based off of a quote that I love (I’ll put it at the end).
Personal style does not come from following others and I don’t just mean celebrities.
Its good to be inspired by people, whether they are family, friends, singers,
designers etc. but do not expect to recreate the same outfits that they do. Do
not live up to the expectations of other peoples’ fashion standards. Don’t get
me wrong, I have a few fashion inspirations and icons, ranging from Coco Chanel
to Lorde to Solange to Victoria Beckham, but I will never go out of my way to
buy pieces exactly like theirs. I use their dress sense in order to get
inspiration for clothing pieces, colours, patterns, and clothing shapes. I
never follow. This is how people make a mockery of others (especially when the
outfit isn’t pulled off properly). Use peoples’ fashion styles to build an
incentive for originality.
Rule
No.5 – Be Yourself
My favourite rule.
Always stay true to
your being. Stay true to who you are. Clothes are a reflection of you. They are
a reflection of your personality, they can scream 10 words to someone who
doesn’t even know you. What you need to make sure of is that those words being
screamed at people are the words you want people to hear.

attention to other flowers. They just bloom”
